Subtalar fusion.
Subtalar fusion, also known as subtalar arthrodesis, is a surgical procedure that involves the fusion of the subtalar joint. The subtalar joint is located below the ankle joint and is formed by the talus bone (one of the foot bones) and the calcaneus bone (heel bone). This joint allows for inversion and eversion movements of the foot, playing a crucial role in walking and other weight-bearing activities. Subtalar fusion is typically recommended to address conditions that cause pain and dysfunction in the subtalar joint, such as severe arthritis, instability, or deformities. The goal of the surgery is to eliminate motion in the subtalar joint, reducing pain and improving the overall function of the foot.
