PCL reconstruction refers to a surgical procedure aimed at repairing or reconstructing the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) in the knee. The PCL is one of the four major ligaments in the knee and plays a crucial role in stabilizing the joint. It connects the femur (thigh bone) to the tibia (shin bone) and helps prevent the tibia from moving too far backward.

Injuries to the PCL often occur due to trauma, such as a direct blow to the front of the knee, hyperextension of the knee, or from a sports-related injury. When the PCL is torn or injured, it can result in instability and decreased function of the knee.

PCL reconstruction is typically considered when conservative methods, such as physical therapy, fail to restore stability and function to the knee. The surgical procedure involves replacing the damaged or torn PCL with a graft, which may be taken from the patient's own body (autograft) or from a donor (allograft).
