MCL Medial Collateral Ligament Reconstruction.
Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL) reconstruction is a surgical procedure that aims to repair or reconstruct a damaged MCL in the knee. The MCL is a ligament on the inner side of the knee that plays a crucial role in stabilizing the joint. It connects the femur (thigh bone) to the tibia (shin bone) and helps prevent excessive side-to-side movement of the knee.
Injuries to the MCL often occur due to a direct blow to the outer side of the knee or from a twisting motion. MCL injuries are common in sports that involve sudden changes in direction, such as football or soccer.
When the MCL is torn or significantly damaged, it may not heal adequately on its own, especially in cases of severe injuries. MCL reconstruction becomes necessary when conservative treatments, such as rest, physiotherapy, and bracing, are insufficient to restore stability to the knee.
